Every year, millions of mail-order returns end up in the trash. At least since Carolin Kebekus' sneakers we have known that many manufacturers systematically destroy even new products without any traces of use.
Things are different at outdoor startup HÄNG Outdoors. Not only returned products in perfect condition are kept - even those with signs of wear, loose threads or small defects end up in the warehouse. "On the one hand, we want to avoid waste," explains founder Tobias Tullius. "On the other hand, we find the sheer waste of resources absolutely worrying."
That's why the startup is now going one step further - and opening its warehouse for creative people. “In January, an upcycler made a down duvet out of an old DÄCKE. That inspired us,” says Tullius, referring to the TikToker @lauraxlora. "We also want to enable other creative people to give our b-stock a second chance and make great new things out of it."
The company then selects the upcycler of the year from among all participants every year - including the award of prizes. The founders Tobias Tullius and Vincent Hommel are not yet revealing exactly what. "It's supposed to be a surprise," says Tullius. "But we will definitely reward the upcyclers for their commitment to our planet, that's for sure."
