Can you sleep in a hammock?

Kann man in einer Hängematte schlafen?

We at HÄNG have been making ultra-light parachute silk hammocks for over five years.

There are a few questions that we hear more often than others. The most common is probably: “Why didn't I think of it earlier? ”Closely followed in second place by: " can you actually sleep in a hammock? " .

And that doesn't mean the power nap, which was originally supposed to last only 20 minutes. There are supposed to be people who replace their bed with a hammock.

In this article we would like to clarify various prejudices and errors, but also provide a few sources that can even be used to prove that it is not so wrong to bed in a piece of vibrating material.

At HÄNG we can do two things very well. Hammocks and sleep. And each of us has spent more than one night in a hammock. And ... [Spoiler alert] ... everyone is still alive.

"But you're lying there crooked."

We also affectionately call this sentence error number one. The assumption that you are lying in a hammock with a round back, like a banana, is due to one reason: incorrect use.
Probably the most important rule when it comes to hammocks is this:

A hammock has to sag. Only when your hammock between the trees has the curvature of a banana have you done everything right.

But that's not all; Because to lie really flat and comfortably in a hammock, there is another trick: lying diagonally.

Correct. Feet slightly to the left and head slightly to the right. So you enlarge the line on which you are lying and the back is no longer crooked. And at the latest now it is so convenient that a 20 minute power nap is off the table.

And so you can also spend the night. According to various studies, it is extremely good.
Here is a small collection of various advantages:

Fall asleep faster

According to a study by Current Biology magazine , you fall asleep faster in a hammock than you do in a bed. In this study, 12 subjects were observed in a sleep laboratory. They slept once in a normal bed and once in a hammock. This is probably due to the fact that lying in a hammock automatically leads to a perfect sleeping position in which the body lies on the back and the head rests between 10-30% higher.

Deeper sleep.

The influence of exercise on sleep behavior was observed at the University of Geneva . Here, the subjects were invited to sleep in a bed that was weighed at intervals like a connecting rod. The participants went to the second phase of sleep more quickly. In addition, this deep sleep phase lasted longer.

Slowly oscillating brain waves with frequencies of at most 5 Hertz were more pronounced and sleep spindles, typical wave packs that swell up and down again, occurred more frequently than when sleeping in a still bed.

And Mulenhaupt, one of the authors, reports on the study:

“… Leads to a sustained increase in slow vibrations and spindle activity. It is suggested that the sensory stimulation in connection with a swinging movement has a synchronizing effect in the brain, which increases the endogenous sleep rhythms ".

Effective for insomnia

Correctly read. Various testimonials confirm that people who suffered from sleep or sleep problems for longer could become this gentleman. They just swapped the bed for a hammock.

No pressure marks

Real talk. Man turns and turns at night. This happens because so-called pressure points form on the body. These are uncomfortable and a reason why we throw ourselves back and forth in our sleep. No matter what high-tech foam you have pumped into your mattress. The continuous fabric surface of a parachute silk hammock distributes the loads completely evenly. So there is almost no pressure point and we have no need to change our position. Many full-time hammock sleepers report that they woke up in the same position in which they fell asleep. What at first seems strange is extremely relaxing, because you just wake up less at night.

No bed box, not a two by two meter mattress. All you need are two hooks and a piece of cloth. Your bed is ready. Quickly assembled and quickly stowed away. So you can finally use the space in your apartment properly. And none of your friends climbs over your blanket at the next house party with their sneakers. Promised.

Better heat regulation

Nowhere else is your body ventilated all around. But be careful here. If it is colder than 21 ° degrees, it can get cold from below. Throwing a blanket into the mat here doesn't always have to work. Because many materials lose their warming effect when they are pressed together. Because the heat is stored in small air cushions. And unfortunately these disappear under your weight. There are various remedies for this: You can put a non-compressible sleeping pad under it, or, even better, hang a so-called underquilt under your hammock. This is half a sleeping bag that traps the air under the hammock.

Man camps in a hammock

You could add a few points to this list. So a hammock is cheaper than a bed and bed bugs come up a bedpost faster than a hammock, but we thought we would focus on those that can be clearly proven.

Now it's time for you to cover a hammock. Even if only for a test. Each of our hammocks is 170cm x 300cm and 5.1 square meters in size larger than a conventional bed and ensures that you can lie a little straighter.
